Krynica is called "The Gem of Polish Spa". The development of the city coincides with the discovery of healing properties of mineral springs in 17th century. The great era of Krynica as a health resort began in 1856 with the activity of Jozef Dietl, the Professor of Jagiellonian University, and the father of Polish balneology. At that time various famous objects were found: Stare Łazienki Mineralne (the Old Mineral Baths), Stare Łazienki Borowinowe (the Old Peat Baths), Dom Zdrojowy (the Spa House), the Main Wooden Pump-room with a promenade, numerous boarding houses and a larch theatre.
At the end of the 19th c. and during the interwar period Krynica was a fashionable and elite resting and meeting place of many famous Poles, such as Matejko, Sienkiewicz, Kraszewski, Modrzejewska, Reymont, Galczynski, Tuwim, and Kiepura who was the owner of villa "Patria". Krynica is also famous for works of a folk painter of primitivism-Nikifor. Nowadays his works gain comprehension and admiration. His paintings and drawings decorate walls of the Nikifor's Museum found in villa "Romanowka" in 1995. After the I World War many buildings were restored and a lot of new ones were built, such as Nowe Łazienki Mineralne (the New Mineral Baths), Nowy Dom Zdrojowy (the New Spa House), a hostel on Jaworzyna Mountain, a funicular to Parkowa Mountain, a winter stadium and a luge-track. After the II World War, the resort was extended, new spas were built as well as the Main Pump-room with a concert hall.
Krynica is the place of numerous international cultural, educational, tourist, and sport events, such as Guitar Competition and International Piano Master Course. In September, thanks to international Kiepura Festival, Krynica changes into the centre of opera and operetta. In the resort there are also performances of folk bands and Resort Orchestra. Krynica became also the centre of winter sports. Two sports events took place there: Europe Championship in lugeing and the World Championship in ice hockey. The stay in Krynica is great thanks to rich and developing cultural and entertaining offer. Numerous bars, pubs, restaurants, and discos encourage to step in and have fantastic time.
